Energy UK responds to the first 'coal-free' fortnight record
Responding to the end of the first 'coal-free' fortnight record, Energy UK's chief executive, Lawrence Slade said:
“Record after record has been broken as the power sector continues to deliver world-leading efforts to decarbonise our economy. We have now seen two landmark records broken this month with the first ‘coal-free’ fortnight and solar power setting a new record too - building on 2018 being the greenest year on record.
“This clearly shows the huge progress made by our sector but, as we transition to this cleaner, greener future, we cannot stand still. Instead we must redouble our efforts and take every measure possible to tackle the climate emergency. In the Future of Energy we set out how we can go further and faster, including a centrally-funded national energy efficiency programme but also calling for greater progress in other sectors including tackling the challenge of decarbonising the heat and transport sectors.
“We are confident that by working in partnership with Government, industry and across sectors, we can achieve further progress towards our climate targets, including achieving net zero emissions by 2050.”
