Energy UK responds to Labour's announcement on solar panels and public ownership of national grid
Responding to the Labour Party news release announcing radical plans to install solar panels on two million homes and take the national grid into public ownership, Energy UK's chief executive, Lawrence Slade said:
“The UK now has its lowest carbon emissions since the 1890s, can go days without generating any power from coal and half our power comes from low carbon sources – all of this has been delivered by the current energy system and private investment.
“With Net Zero setting even more challenging emission reduction targets, we need to expand still further the contribution renewables like solar will make over the coming years and decades – and give all customers the chance to benefit from taking part in this transformation.
“Just as crucially, we also need to upgrade our energy infrastructure to a smart, flexible system that makes the best use of these more diverse, numerous and localised sources of power. Wasting precious years on the unnecessary and complex restructuring of a system which is delivering results - and jeopardising the billions of investment required - is the last thing we need if we are serious about tackling climate change with the urgency it demands.”
